On Saturday, February 6th Sunray students competed in the Band Solo and Ensemble Competition. Usually, our students would travel for this contest, but this year, due to COVID, a judge was sent to us. Our students performed in the high school auditorium and received feedback and a rating of 1 through 5 from their judge.
We had a total of 35 middle school students perform, some of which played multiple performances. Of the 17 solos, 15 received a Division 1 “Superior” rating and 2 received a Division 2 “Excellent” rating. Of the 12 ensembles, 8 received a Division 1 “Superior” rating and 4 received a Division 2 “Excellent” rating.
The following students performed solos: Cecilia Arreguin, Esmeralda Baeza, Ethan Balderrama, Justin Harrison, Brody Purswell, Maribel Rivera, Alexa Rodriguez, Joshua Seale, Case Womble, Jimena Alvarez, Kevin Bain, Sye Boatmun, Braxton Lodholm, Ivan De la Rosa, Kiara Salazar, Mattie Strickland, and Rubi Velasco.
The following students performed in an ensemble: Caytlen Albro, Cecilia Arreguin, Esmeralda Baeza, Ethan Balderrama, Luis Cervantes, Enya Diaz, Guadalupe Gonzalez, Marycruz Gonzalez, Justin Harrison, Noah Heidenreich, Adalie Peña, Brody Purswell, Dominic Rivera, Yusuri Rivero, Joshua Seale, Giselle Varela, Anahi Villanueva, Christopher Villarreal, Case Womble, Jimena Alvarez, Justin Bain, Kevin Bain, Jenny Castellanos, Ivan De la Rosa, Braxton Lodholm, Moncerrad Puga, Kiara Salazar, Aallura Sharp, Havan Stephens, Mattie Strickland, Azriel Vargas, and Rubi Velasco.
In addition to the middle school students, 16 high school students performed as well.
The flute quartet, which consisted of Kenzie Lodholm, Allona Makhanu, Emma Morris, and Isabel Sanchez, received a Division 1 “Superior” rating.
The brass quartet, consisting of Jose Mejia, Garett Moss, Augustus Shirley, and Alessandro Zamarripa, received a Division 1 “Superior” rating.
The brass quintet, which consisted of Gizelle Borunda, Brayson Hutches, Augustus Shirley, Isaac Tovar, and Alessandro Zamarripa, received a Division 2 “Excellent” rating.
Miguel Chacon and Jose Mejia received a Division 1 “Superior” rating on their solos.
Sabrina Harrison, Maryn Hatfield, Tory Trahern, and Alessandro Zamarripa played class 1 solos by memory and received a Division 1 “Superior” rating, which qualifies them to advance to the state level of Solo and Ensemble. Due to COVID, they will not be able to travel to Austin and play their solos in person, but they will be competing virtually later in the semester.

NJHS inductions date has been rescheduled to February 18, 2021 due to the basketball playoff game.
Varsity girls playoff basketball game will be Thursday February 11 at 6:00 against Panhandle at Borger High School.
